Automations: Why Is the Opening Message Important? Follow
This feature is only available when the keyword is detected in an Instagram comment.
When a user sends a keyword via direct message (DM) or by responding to a Story, it is the user who initiates the private conversation with your brand. In this case, the automation can start directly with the flow configured in Step 2.
However, when the keyword is detected in a public comment, the situation is different. It is the brand that initiates the private conversation, and for this reason, Meta applies certain limitations until the user interacts with the first message.
What Happens Before the User Interacts?
While the user has not interacted with the first private message:
- The message will appear in the Instagram Message Requests folder.
- You will not be able to continue the conversation with additional messages.
- You will not be able to use advanced features, such as checking if the user follows your account.
What Is the Opening Message?
The opening message is a transition message sent before the flow configured in Step 2.
Its sole purpose is to get the user to click "Continue" and start the private conversation with your brand.
Once the user interacts with this message:
- The conversation is initiated.
- The flow configured in Step 2 will be sent automatically.
- You will be able to continue the conversation for the next 24 hours.
- You will be able to use advanced features, such as checking if the user follows your account.
The opening message does not deliver the main content of the automation. Its function is to initiate the conversation so that the Step 2 flow can run with all the capabilities of Instagram Messenger.
Best Practices
- Use a brief message.
- Do not include links in the opening message.
- Invite the user to click "Continue".
- Save the main content of the automation for Step 2.
