Tutorial: How to create a betting Pool

This tutorial will show you how to invite participants to take part in a betting pool promotion in which they have to guess the right answers to a series of questions.

 

 

Step 1. Create the promotion

1. Access the Easypromos Control Panel and log in with your email address and password to manage and create your promotions.

 2. Create a new promotion using the “Create New Promotion” button.

3. You’ll see a list of available products. Choose “Prediction” to create a promotion that consists of a series of questions asking participants to predict the result of a game, championship, tournament, and so on.

4.Go on to step 2 and choose the platform version to use (Premium or White Label).

5. Your promotion is already created! In the background, you can see the promotion management page. A pop-up window will ask you some extra information in order to help you with pre-settings. If you are not interested, you can skip this step.

6. Now you find yourself in the promotion management page, where you have all the options for configuring the promotion. Below we outline all the most relevant sections:

  1. Header. You will find the title of the promotion, the version and other relevant information such as the ID number of the promotion, which identifies each promotion. Give this number to the Easypromos team if you have any issues with the promotion. This will make it easier for them to review your settings.
  2. Quick button to Preview the promotion. When clicking this button, the Preview tool will open in a new browser window, so you can continue working comfortably in the promotion and, at the same time, preview how the final result is going.
  3. Link to the promotion. This is the URL that you should use in all the dissemination actions that you are going to carry out. More information here.
  4. Copy link button. Here you'll be able to automatically copy the link to disseminate the promotion.
  5. Activate Promotion button. When you have the promotion prepared and ready to launch, click this button to activate and start it. This button will take you to the activation page, where you can review the billing information to proceed to make the payment of the promotion.
  6. Side menu. Here you will find all the configuration options of the promotion.
  7. Promotion status. It indicates the status of the promotion: Draft, Active or Expired, as well as if it’s about to start. Once the promotion period has ended, this field will be marked in red saying: Status: Expired. What to do: Here you can choose what you want to show in the URL of the promotion.
  8. Link to the configuration tutorial. For each type of application you have available from here the link to the step-by-step tutorial so you do not miss any important step.
  9. Direct access to configuration options within the Editor. This module presents the access to the edition of the following sections which are located within the Editor:
    • Management of the dates and the time zone that will have the promotion.
    • Languages: It indicates the default language of the promotion and it allows you to change it if you need it.
    • Localization: It allows to limit the participation to one or several countries (option included by default in the Premium and the White Libel promotions, and in the Basic version by purchasing the additional extension). More information.

 

Step 2. Create the questions and answers

The platform will come with the pre-sets relevant to the type of application you have chosen. Now, set the questions that you wish to ask participants. Next, move on to the Advanced Options in order to customize the application to meet your needs.

2. Go to the Pages> Quiz section and begin creating your first question by clicking on the corresponding button.

3. For every question you create, the following window will appear to help you choose the question type. If you’re already familiar with the Quiz Editor, click on "Advanced" and you’ll see all the options.

For this type of promotion we suggest you start by using closed questions (single response, multi-response, sortable response) and dropdown menus. 

 

Single Answer

The participant will only be able to select one of the suggested answers. This is the most common type of question in a betting pool promotion.

When clicking the "Create" button you’ll be taken to the question editor, where you will find the following option tabs:

1. Contents. Here you will find all the options to configure your question:

  • Question text: Type here the question you want to ask the users.
  • Upload Media: Decide if you want to complete it with image or video.
  • Design: If you upload a support image for the question, decide if you want a horizontal or vertical design.
  • Feedback message text: It allows users to be informed of the correct answer by presenting an informative text that will appear to the user after answering each question. You can customize a feedback message text for the correct answer and a feedback message text for the wrong answers.

2. Answers: Click the "New Answer" button to create as many answers as you have planned for the question:

Important! For optimal display of each entry, we recommend that each answer/button include text as well as image.

If you have created a "Single answer" question, the participant will only be able to select one answer option:

Multi-answer

This type of quiz enables participants to select more than one answer. When setting it up you can decide how many different answers the participant may select. 

  • Minimum and maximum number of answers.With these two fields you can determine how many answers the participant should select in order to progress to the next question. In betting pools it’s a good idea to make the minimum and maximum the same. 
  • Scoring system. It’s possible to award points for each correct answer, or alternatively to only award points if the participant gets all the answers right.

Selectable list

If you have a large number of options and the participant has to choose just one, this option might be useful. It could also come in handy if you want to ask several questions about the betting pool on the same screen. You can choose to make the list drop-down or auto-completable.

Important! While you’re setting up the questions and answers, leave all the answers as “0”. When you know the results you can fill in the points to indicate the correct answers. Here we explain how to reward points for correct answers.

 

Step 3. Customize the texts and images for each page 

Configure the texts and images of each page of the promotion:

A) Welcome.

  • Change the provisional title for one that allows identify the strong points of your promotion. It’s a good idea to make this descriptive text as attractive as possible to users.
  • Configure the texts for the page and upload an image to give it more dynamism.
  • In the description, change the provisional text to personalize and explain your own contest mechanism so that participants are clear about what steps they should follow to take part in the contest. You can also customize the ‘Enter’ and ‘View entries’ buttons.

B) Entry form.

Add the fields that you wish your participants to complete. You can also customize the text and page header image. In the Premium and White Label versions you can fill in the form with all the additional fields, dropdown menus and check boxes that you need. C) Thank you.

Customize it with a final image and a thank you text. You can also create an extra button with an external link.

  • Text to encourage users to share. On the left side of the first share button there is a text that you can customize. Use this to encourage your participants to share the contest.
  • Thank you message. You can also use it to thank participants and tell them when the winner will be announced.
  • Use the final image to give a more personalized aspect to the sweepstake, reminding participants what the prize is and encouraging them to share the sweepstake.

1. Click the "Enable" button to display the participants gallery.
2. In the "Options" tab, set up the following options:

  • Publish quiz answers on entries: This option is enabled by default to publicly present the prediction made by each participant. This also modifies the public listing options. The user will be able to order the list by "Last participants" and by "Score". In the registration of each participant, their responses will be shown in the pool.
  • Show quiz score on entries: This option allows you to display the individual score achieved by each participant in the gallery.

Once you have been able to recalculate the score and update the results of each participant, they will also be presented publicly and the participants can be ordered by that aspect.

Note: Additionally, in promotions created with the Premium design template you have the following additional functionalities to customize the pages of the promotion:

  • Customize the name of each section and the icon that identifies it within the promotion menu. For example, you can change the default name of "Welcome" page to "Start".
  • Add new sections in the promotion menu to present additional content. This new section can be set up in two different ways:
    • New page, for example, to present and explain the prizes of the promotion.
    • External link, to drive traffic to your website or microsite.

Step 4. Customize the design

In the Design menu you can customize the look & feel of your promotion completely to adapt it to your brand or product.

In this way, the "Design" section will be presented the following options:

  • Colors: Change the colors of the texts and the action elements of the promotion.
  • Typographies: Select the font used for texts and action buttons of the promotion.
  • Buttons: Set the style of the promotion buttons (outlined or solid).
  • Container (only Premium template): Completely customize the container by setting the style, opacity, height or position.
  • Background: Customize the background of the promotion with an own image or a color. The background will be the same for the different pages of the promotion.
  • Template: Decide which design template you want to use to customize the promotion: the Basic design template, or the Premium design template.
  • CSS Styles (only White Label): Use your own CSS styles to completely customize the template.

Step 5. Insert the Terms and Conditions 

Insert the terms and conditions explaining all the features of the betting pool. Terms will be displayed via a button on the promotion Welcome page, as well as from a link available on any page of the promotion.

To add the terms and conditions, go to the Editor> General> Legal content, where you will find the following sections:

Step 6. Set up the My Networks modules and the promotion footer

The “My Networks” module enables you to completely customize the screen that’s presented to the participants encouraging them to “Like” your Facebook Page. The My Networks module can be customized with Facebook pages, as well as with Twitter, Instagram and Youtube accounts. Find out how to set this up.

To customize the My Networks module go to Editor > General > My Networks:

Pool_14.pngYou can also customize or deactivate the promotion footer texts. This is a banner presented at the foot of each page of the promotion.

To enable the Footer of the promotion go to Editor > General > Footer:

Step 7. Customize the viral content

This section is very important for achieving good virality for your betting pool.  Viral content is what’s displayed when the participating user shares the promotion to invite friends to take part or vote. You’ll be able to customize the content of this shared message, tailoring it to fit each social media channel.

To customize the viral content of the promotion go to Editor > General > Share:

You should fill in the following sections:

A) Generic.

Set up the generic contents of the promotion here:

  • Viral image: This is the image that will accompany the text to be shared. To make it optimal for the social networks, we suggest a measurement of 1200px wide by 630px high. This same image will be shared via Facebook, Pinterest and Google+. If you don’t upload a specific image for this section, the main promotion image will be disseminated when a participant shares the promotion.
  • Generic content: This is the viral text that will be disseminated across the social networks when the participant shares the promotion via the share button on the main page, the registration form or the header of the participations gallery. Learn how to configure this.

B) Recruiting.

Viral text that will be shared across the social networks when the participant shares the promotion from the final page. Keep in mind that this is the text that the participant will share among his/her friends, inviting them to participate in the betting pool. 

 

Step 8. Advanced setup options

To create a Betting Pool check the settings in the Pages> Form> Options section, because here you can check how users should register.

Below we explain what each of these options consists of:

  • Max. users: Decide if you want to close the promotion to a maximum number of participants. By default, there is no limit of users who can participate in the contest.
  • Maximum entries per user: It allows you to define the number of times the same user can participate, but in the case of a Betting Pool you must leave it with the default value (1 participation per user).
  • Enable Facebook Login: Enable the login with Facebook window so that the user can participate identifying with his Facebook user.
  • Do you want to be mandatory for users to connect on Facebook?: Requires login with Facebook to participate. Check the form with which participants identify themselves.
  • Enable premoderation: You can moderate your entries before they appear in the public gallery. (This option is not required in a Betting Pool promotion).
  • Notification of new entrant: Use it if you want to receive an email when a new entrant registers in this promotion. 
  • Anonymous registration: Disable the form in case you prefer not to ask for personal data of the participants and to make a more agile quiz. More information.
  • Anti-fraud options: With the aim of helping administrators organize top-quality contests, the platform contains a series of techniques and tools to help minimize the impact of participants bad practices. More information. 

 

Step 9. Restrictions to access the promotion

The application allows you to restrict the access to the promotion to limit users who can participate in it. Specifically, the platform offers you 2 forms of restriction:

Note: The functionality to restrict the promotion by age is only available for promotions created with the Premium version and the White Label version that have been designed with the Premium design template.

Step 10. Communicate with participants via the Emails Platform

If you need to communicate with participants during and after the promotion you can use this section to create, customize and send emails.

This tool can be very useful for betting pool promotions because it means you can set up automatic emails to be sent to participants to:

  1. Thank participants for registering.
  2. Inform them of their score once the points have been calculated.
  3. Communicate with winning users informing them of their success.

Important! The Platform provides a "smart tags" feature which enables you to set up customized emails. Use the "smart tag" {{user_recruiting_url}} so that this can be replaced by the recruiting URL of each participant.

  

 

Step 11. Publish the winners page (optional)

Before publishing the promotion or during the course of the it, you have the possibility to show publically the prizes that you are going to give away in your promotion, and at the same time it will show the winners of each prize when there are winners. You can decide if you want to publish the prizes page from the beginning of the promotion or you can publish it when you have the winners. To customize and publish the winners page go to Editor > Pages > Winners.

Step 12. Preview your Promotion

At any time, you can check how the promotion will be displayed once you activate it in order to review the graphic part. To do this, within the same Editor of the promotion you will find the "Preview" direct button in the Editor's header:

Please keep in mind that the Preview of the promotion is only to see what the promotion will look like, it doesn’t work to test features. That’s why you can go to the next page without filling in your data for example. To test the recruitment process of the promotion, you need to activate and you can protect it with a password to test it privately. Here we explain how.

 

Step 13. Activate the promotion

Once you have configured all aspects of the promotion, you can activate it from the management page of the promotion, where you can make the payment. Here you will find more information.

Step 14. Publish the promotion

Although your promotion is now active, there’s one step left: publishing the promotion. When you create the betting pool, a URL is generated. This serves as a direct link to the promotion. By default, this main link leads to a microsite where the promotion is displayed. Also, but not exclusively, you can publish the betting pool on a Facebook Page or embed it in your blog or website. Use the "Publish" button to choose where to publish it. You can find more information about Step 12 here.

 

Step 15. Disseminate the promotion

It’s also important to disseminate your questionnaire via various channels. Always use the main promotion link, as it’s the only one which is compatible with any type of device.

You can share the promotion using the following methods:

  • With the direct promotion link.
  • With the Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest “Share” button.
  • Making your promotion a Featured promotion. This option implies placing your campaign in the section of Easypromos highlighted promotions. This has an additional cost to the price of activating the campaign, and this price is per day of the campaign. If you'd like to create a highlighted campaign, consult this tutorial

Step 16. Create a “Multiday” betting pool (optional)

If you’d like to create a betting pool for each day of the championship, tournament or competition, the ideal solution is to create a promotion for each day and then present them all in a promotions group:

Using this solution will give you a global ranking of participants which will be updated as new points are added after each new promotion.

 

If you like this option:

  1. Create a betting pool by following the steps in this tutorial. Once you’ve got the basics sorted out make a copy of the promotion for each day.
  2. Organize the promotions into a group and complete the setup.
  3. Bear in mind that participants must identify themselves via Facebook in order for the ranking mechanism to work properly.

 

Step 17. Manage the promotion while it's active

While the promotion is active you can monitor and manage the entries from the management page by clicking on the "Participants" section in the menu on the left side. You can also access the entries list form the "Statistics":

From the "Participants" section you will be able to see information about all participants and download it to Excel.

Note: Information about participants will be available even after the promotion has finished.

 

Step 18. Update the scores and calculate points accumulated by participants

Once the event or activity has finished, return to the Promotion Management Page to select the correct answers to each question, and manage the predictions made by participants.

Follow these steps:

1. Quiz:

Access the Editor>Pages > Quiz and rate the correct answers.

Tip: you can award as many points as you like for each correct answer. For example, if a question was harder to answer, you can award more points to whoever got it right.

 

2. See participants:

Go back to the Promotion Management Page and the “See Participants” section in order to recalculate participants’ points.

Once you’ve rated the correct answers you can calculate the number of points obtained by each participant. Use the following tool:

A screen will show you the calculation progress and tell you how many participants’ results are being updated:

From this point on, the number of points obtained by each user will be displayed in the participants list as well as the corresponding Excel file. 

Use the filter and sort tool located in the left-hand column to see how many participants have successfully answered all the questions and who has the highest score.

 

Step 19. Check the betting pool statistics

Access the "Statistics" section to find out more about the evolution of your participants and their interaction with the application. This information will be available from the moment the first participant registers and even after the promotion has ended. Learn more about the information you can find in this section.

Step 20. Manage prizes and publication of winners

When the participation period of the promotion ends, as the administrator of the promotion you have the prize management system available that allows you to create the prizes of the promotion and configure how they will be assigned. When the promotion has finished, you can assign prizes randomly or manually.

  • Randomly: You can run one or more sweepstakes among all of the participants or among a segment of participants and obtain a certificate of validity with the results of the sweepstakes.
  • Manually: You can assign one or more prizes manually to the participants in the contest. This is useful for example in contests with voting, skills test or where the winners are selected by a jury or a notary public, or manually by the organizing brand.

Step 21. End of the promotion

The end of a promotion is controlled through the dates set up in the promotion Editor, so when the "End of publication date" is passed, the promotion changes from active status to expired status and, by default, the promotion is unpublished and is no longer visible, and in this case, a screen with the message "promotion expired" is displayed.

As administrator of the contest you have the possibility to edit the content of this "promotion expired" screen, or even republish the promotion so that it is visible again, for example, if you want to show the winners of the promotion or keep the contest gallery visible.
