Tutorial: How to create a Predictions contest

This tutorial will show you how to create and run a contest where participants try to predict the right answers to a series of questions.

 

 

Step 1. Create the promotion

1. Access the Easypromos Control Panel and log in with your email address and password to manage and create your promotions.

 2. Create a new promotion by clicking the green button.

3. You’ll see a list of available products. Choose “Prediction” to create a promotion with a series of questions. You can ask participants to predict the result of a game, championship, tournament, and more.

4. Go on to step 2 and choose which platform version you want to use (Premium or White Label).

5. Your promotion has been created! In the background, you can see the promotion management page. A pop-up window will ask for some extra information to help with pre-settings. If you're not interested, you can skip this step.

6. Now you find yourself on the promotion management page, where you have all the promotion settings and options. Below, we outline the most important sections:

  1. Header. This displays the title of the promotion, the platform version (Premium or White Label), and other relevant information such as the promotion ID number of the promotion. The promotion status indicates whether the promotion is Draft, Active or Expired, as well as if it’s about to start. Once the promotion period has ended, this field will be marked in red saying: Status: Expired. You can choose what to show on an expired promotion page.
  2. Link to the promotion. Use this URL whenever you share the promotion. Learn more about sharing here. The copy link button automatically copies the link to make sharing even faster.
  3. Activate Promotion. When the promotion is ready to launch, click this button to activate it. You'll be taken to the activation page, where you can review the billing information and make payments.
  4. Side menu. All your promotion settings in one place.
  5. View tutorial. This tutorial guides you step by step through the creation and management of your promotion.
  6. Promotion dates and timezone control the phases of the promotion.
    Languages indicates the default language of the promotion. You can change this, if you wish.
    Localization limits the participation to one or several countries. Learn more about country restrictions here.
  7. Next steps: Practical recommendations that will guide you in the creation and management of your campaign.
Tip: The promotion ID number (#) is a unique identifier for each promotion. Quote this number if you need to contact the Easypromos support team with any issues. This will make it easier for us to review your settings and help you out.

Step 2. Create the questions and answers

The platform comes with lots of pre-settings, based on the version you have chosen (Premium or White Label). First set up the questions that you wish to ask participants. Next, you can customize the platform features to meet your needs.   

1. Enter the promotion “Editor”.

2. Go to Pages > Quiz. Create your first question by clicking on the corresponding button.

3. For every question you create, the following window will appear to help you choose the question type. If you’re already familiar with the Quiz Editor, click on "Advanced" to see extra question options.

For a Predictions contest, we suggest using closed questions (single response, multi-response, sortable response) and dropdown menus. 

 

Single Answer

The participant will only be able to select one of the suggested answers. This is the most common type of question in a Predictions promotion.

Click "create" and the question editor will open. You'll see the following option tabs:

1. Contents. Use this tab to set up your question:

  • Question text: Type the question you want to ask here.
  • Upload Media: Decide if you want to complement the question with an image or video.
  • Design: If you upload an image for the question, choose between a horizontal or vertical display.
  • Feedback message text: You can present an informative text after users answer the question. You can customize feedback for correct and incorrect answers.

2. Answers: Click the "New Answer" button to create as many answers as you have planned for the question:

Important! For optimal display of each entry, we recommend that each answer includes text as well as an image.

If you have created a "Single answer" question, the participant will only be able to select one of the options available:

Multi-answer

This type of quiz enables participants to select more than one answer. You can decide how many different answers the participant may select. 

  • Minimum and maximum number of answers. Use these two fields to define how many answers the participant should select. For Predictions, it’s a good idea to make the minimum and maximum number of answers the same. 
  • Scoring system. It’s possible to award points for each correct answer, or to only award points if the participant chooses all the possible correct options.

The participant must put the correct answers in order (using all the options, or just a set number of them).

Selectable list

If you have a large number of options and the participant has to choose just one, this format is the best choice. It could also come in handy if you want to ask several Prediction questions on the same page. You can choose to make the list drop-down or auto-complete.

Important! While you’re setting up the questions and answers, leave all the answers as “0”. When you know the results, you can fill in the points to indicate which predictions were correct. Learn how to reward points for correct predictions.

 

Step 3. Customize the text and images for each page 

Format the text and images for each page of the promotion:

A) Welcome.

  • Change the provisional title for one that highlights the strong points of your promotion. Make this descriptive text as attractive as possible to users.
  • Format the texts on the page, and upload an image to make it more dynamic.
  • Change the provisional description for something more personal. Explain how the contest works, so that participants are clear about what steps they should follow to take part. You can also customize the ‘Enter’ and ‘View entries’ buttons with your own text.

B) Entry form.

Add the fields that you wish your participants to complete. You can also customize the text and page header image. You can expand the form with all the additional fields, dropdown menus and check boxes that you need. Find out how to set up the entry form.

C) Thank you.

Customize the final page with an image and a thank you text. You can also create an extra button, with a link to an external site of your choice.

  • Encourage users to share. To the left of the first share button, there is a text that you can customize. Use this to encourage your participants to share the contest.
  • Thank the participants. You can also use the text to thank participants, and tell them when the winner will be announced.
  • Use the final image to give a personal touch to the survey, reminding participants what the prize is and encouraging them to share.

1. Click the "Enable" button to display the participants gallery.
2. In the "Options" tab, set up the following options:

  • Publish quiz answers on entries: This option is enabled by default to publicly present each user's predictions. You can also edit the public listing options. Viewers will be able to order the list by "Last participants" and by "Score". When participants register, their responses will be shown in the gallery.
  • Show quiz score on entries: This option allows you to display the individual score achieved by each participant in the gallery, once the results of the predictions are known.

Once you know the results of the predictions, you can recalculate scores and update each participant's results. The gallery will be updated too, and viewers can rank the participants by their scores.

Note: You also have access to the following customization features:

  • Customize the name of each section, and the icon that identifies it within the promotion menu. For example, you can change the default name of "Welcome" page to "Start", with an icon to match.
  • Add new sections to the promotion menu. New sections can be set up in two different ways:
    • New page, for example, to present and explain the prizes of the promotion.
    • External link, to drive traffic to your website or microsite.

Step 4. Customize the design

In the Design menu, you can completely customize the look and feel of the promotion to match your brand or product.

The Design menu offers the following options:

  • Colors: Change the colors of the texts and action elements (such as buttons) in the promotion.
  • Typographies: Select the font used for texts and action elements.
  • Buttons: Set the style of the buttons to outlined or solid.
  • Container: Completely customize the container by setting the style, opacity, height or position.
  • Background: Customize the background of the promotion with your own image or choice of color. The background will be the same for the different pages of the promotion.
  • CSS Styles (White Label only): Use your own CSS styles to completely customize the template.

Step 5. Insert legal texts

In this section you can upload legal texts to display them in the promotion. Specifically you can upload the terms and conditions to explain all aspects of the promotion, contest or sweepstakes. Additionally you can also upload your privacy policy to explain how and for what purpose you will treat the data of the users that register in the promotion. In Premium and White Label promotions it's also possible to upload your own Cookies policy.

To add the terms and conditions, go to Editor > General > Legal content, where you will find the following sections:

  • Terms and conditions
  • Privacy Policy
  • Cookies Policy (only in Premium & White Label promotions)

Step 6. Set up My Networks and the promotion footer

The “My Networks” module enables you to completely customize the screen which encourages users to “Like” your Facebook Page. My Networks can be set up for Facebook pages, as well as Twitter, Instagram and Youtube accounts. Find out how to set this up.

To customize My Networks, go to Editor > General > My Networks:

Pool_14.pngThe footer is a banner presented at the base of each page of the promotion. You can customize this text, or deactivate it if you don't want it.

To edit or enable the footer, go to Editor > General > Footer:

Step 7. Customize viral content

This section is very important if you want your Predictions contest to go viral. Viral content is what’s displayed when users share the promotion and invite friends to take part or vote. You’ll be able to customize the content of this shared message, tailoring it to fit each social media channel.

To customize the viral content of the promotion, go to Editor > General > Share:

You should fill in the following sections:

A) Generic.

Set up the generic contents of the promotion here:

  • Viral image: This is the image that will accompany the text to be shared. To optimize for social networks, we suggest dimensions of 1200px by 630px. The same image will be shared on Facebook, Pinterest and Google+. If you don’t upload a specific image for this section, the main promotion image will be displayed when participants share the promotion.
  • Generic content: This is the viral text that will be shown on social networks when participants use the share button on the main page, the registration form or the header of the gallery. Learn how to edit this.

B) Recruiting.

This is the viral text that will be shared on social media when participants use the share buttons on the final page. Remember that this is the text which participants use to invite their friends to take part. 

Step 8. Advanced settings

Check the settings in Pages > Form > Options. These options control how users register, as well as anti-fraud mechanisms.

Below, we explain these options in more detail:

  • Max. users: Decide if you want to limit the promotion to a maximum number of participants. By default, there is no limit on participation.
  • Maximum entries per user: You can define the number of times the same user can participate. For Predictions contest, the number is 1 and you cannot edit it.
  • Enable Facebook Login: Enable the Facebook login window so that users can participate with their Facebook accounts.
  • Do you want it to be mandatory for users to connect on Facebook?: You can require users to login with Facebook to participate. View the form which participants use to identify themselves.
  • Enable premoderation: You can moderate entries before they appear in the public gallery. This option does not apply to a Predictions promotion.
  • Notification of new entrant: Enable this option if you want to receive an email whenever a new participant registers for the promotion. 
  • Anonymous registration: If you don't want to collect personal data from participants, disable the registration form. This also makes the quiz more agile. Learn more.

Step 9. Set entry restrictions

You can restrict access to the promotion for certain users. Specifically, the platform offers 2 forms of restriction:

  • Restriction by country: You can limit the promotion to a specific country or countries. In this way, only users who connect from the selected country or countries will see the promotion. Learn how to enable country restrictions here.

Step 10. Communicate with participants via the email platform

If you want to communicate with participants during or after the promotion, you can use this section to create, customize and send emails.

This tool is especially useful for Predictions promotions. You can set up automatic emails in order to:

  1. Thank participants for registering.
  2. Tell participants their score, once the points have been calculated.
  3. Inform the winners.

Important! The Platform provides a "smart tags" feature for automating customized emails. Use the "smart tag" {{user_recruiting_url}} and when you send emails, the tag will be replaced by each participant's unique recruiting URL.  

 

Step 11. Publish the winners page (optional)

Before or during the promotion, you can choose to show the prizes that you are going to give away. The same page will show the winners of the promotion, once there are winners. You can decide if you want to publish the prizes page from the beginning of the promotion, or wait until the winners have been selected. To customize and publish the winners page, go to Editor > Pages > Winners.

Step 12. Preview the promotion

You can preview the design of the promotion at any point. You'll find the Go to Preview button in the header of the Editor, on the right-hand side:

Please keep in mind that the Preview of the promotion is just to see what the promotion will look like. It is not a functional test. That’s why you can click through the pages without filling in your data, for example. To test the functionality of the promotion, you will have to activate it with password protection, and try it out privately. We explain how to do that here.

 

Step 13. Activate the promotion

Once you have configured all aspects of the promotion, you can activate it from the management page of the promotion. You can also view billing information and make payments from this page. Find more information here.

Step 14. Publish the promotion

Although your promotion is now active, there’s one step left: publishing the promotion.

When you created your Predictions contest, a microsite with a unique URL was generated to display the promotion. This URL is the main link to the promotion, and it leads to the Welcome page by default - but you can edit this.

Also, and not exclusively, you can publish the promotion on a Facebook Page or embed it in your blog or website. Use the "Publish" button to choose where to publish it. You can learn more about publishing here.

 

Step 15. Share the promotion

It's important to share the promotion on as many different channels as possible. Always use the main promotion link, as it’s uniquely compatible with all devices.

You can share the promotion using the following methods:

  • With the direct promotion link.
  • With the Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest “Share” button.
  • Making your promotion a Featured promotion. This adds your campaign to the list of Easypromos highlighted promotions. Featuring a promotion has an additional cost, calculated per day of the campaign. If you'd like to Feature a campaign, consult this tutorial

Step 16. Create a multi-day contest (optional)

If you’d like to create a Predictions contest for each day of a championship, tournament or competition, the ideal solution is to create a promotion for each day. Keep them all together by presenting them in a promotions group:

Using this solution will give you a global ranking of participants, updated each day as new results of predictions are added.

 

To create a multi-day contest:

  1. Create a Predictions contest by following the steps in this tutorial. Once you’ve got the basics sorted out, make a duplicate of the promotion for each day.
  2. Organize the promotions into a group and complete the setup.
  3. Bear in mind that participants must identify themselves via Facebook in order for the ranking mechanism to work properly.

 

Step 17. Manage the active promotion

While the promotion is active, you can monitor entries from the management page. Click on the "Participants" section in the left-hand menu. You can also access the entries list from the "Statistics" section:

In the "Participants" section, you can view information about all participants and download it to an Excel file.

Note: Information about participants will be available even after the promotion has finished.

 

Step 18. Update scores and calculate points

Once the event or activity has finished, return to the Promotion Management Page to select the correct answers to each question, and manage the predictions made by participants.

Follow these steps:

1. Quiz:

Access Editor > Pages > Quiz and score the correct answers.

Tip: you can award as many points as you like for each correct answer. For example, if a question was harder to answer, you can award more points to whoever got it right.

 

2. See participants:

Go back to the Promotion Management Page and the “See Participants” section in order to recalculate participants’ points.

Once you’ve scored the correct answers, you can calculate the number of points obtained by each participant. Use the following tool:

A screen will show you the calculation progress, and tell you how many participants’ results are being updated:

From this point on, the number of points obtained by each user will be displayed in the participants list, as well as the corresponding Excel file. 

Use the filter and sort tool located in the left-hand column to see how many participants have successfully answered all the questions. You can also check who has the highest score.

 

Step 19. View promotion statistics

Access the "Statistics" section to find out more about participants and how they interact with the application. This information will be available from the moment the first participant registers, and remains on your account after the promotion has ended. Learn more about the information you can access in this section.

Step 20. Manage prizes and publish the winners

When the participation period of the promotion ends, you can use the prize management system to create prizes and set up how they will be awarded. When the promotion has finished, you can assign prizes randomly or manually.

  • Randomly: You can run one or more giveaways among all participants, or a segment of participants, and obtain a certificate of validity with the results.
  • Manually: You can assign one or more prizes manually. This is useful for contests with voting or skills tests. We also recommend this option when the winners are selected by a jury, notary public, or the organizing brand.

Step 21. Finishing up the promotion

The end of a promotion is controlled by the dates set up in the promotion Editor. When the "End of publication date" is passed, the promotion status changes from active to expired. By default, the promotion is unpublished and is no longer visible. If users try to access the promotion URL, a screen with the message "promotion expired" is displayed.

As administrator of the contest, you can choose to edit the content of this "promotion expired" screen. You could republish the promotion so that it is visible again, show the winners of the promotion, or keep the gallery of entries on display.
